【Goal】Change the settings so that the characters are displayed correctly.
*This is a phenomenon that occurs because there are missing materials in the game settings.
[1] Click on “Game Settings” and select “Open Game Settings“.
[2] The “Basic Game Settings” window should appear.
In the “Character Sprite Direction Type” field, select either “4-directional” or “8-directional” depending on the character material being used.
If this setting is different from the material given, the character will be split or halved. Further details will be explained in the side notes.
- If you are currently “8-directional“, please switch to “4-directional“. (character is probably cut in half)
- If you are currently “4-directional“, please switch to “8-directional“. (character is probably divided into 2 people)
[3] After changing, click “OK“
[4] Test play.
If it is still not displayed correctly, please refer to [Side Note 2] and [Side Note 3].
That’s all for this tutorial. Below is a more detailed explanation, so please read it if you are confused.
[Side Note 1] Extra Info
Wolf RPG Editor follows a base template for character materials (AKA “CharaChips“). You can choose from two methods: “4-directional” or “8-directional“.
- “4-directional” is for an image where the character sprite faces 4 directions: top, bottom, left, and right.
- “8-directional” is for an image where the character sprite faces 8 directions: top, bottom, left, right, top left, top right, bottom left, and bottom right.
The standard character chips (such as First Seed Materials) are usually “4-directional“. Unfortunately, the “8-directional” character chips are not very popular on the internet.
Well then, regarding the cause for split/halved characters, I’m sure that you can see that one image is clearly divided when displaying characters.
The number of divisions are not determined by the size of the material, but are decided by the “direction type” and the “animation pattern” of the image.
- If the settings on the direction type is “4-directional”, the image is divided into 3 parts horizontally.
- If the settings on the direction type is “8-directional”, the image is divided into 6 parts. (only if the animation pattern has 3 parts)
The same is true when split into 2 characters, the image is divided into 6 parts. In order for an image to be displayed as 2 characters, there must be at least 3 divisions.
(We mentioned 3 divisions and 6 divisions, but if the animation has 5 patterns, then the image will have 5 or 10 divisions.)
In addition, it’s impossible to use both “4-directional” and “8-directional” images in one game, so choose only one direction type.
[Side Note 3] Animation Pattern
If the method in [Side Note 1] doesn’t solve anything, then the problem might be that the animation pattern is wrong.
Wolf RPG Editor allows you to choose the character animation pattern. There are two types: “3-pattern” and “5-pattern“.
“5-pattern” has smoother animation than “3-pattern”, but has very little material.
Well, if the settings for “character animation pattern” is wrong, then a half-cut image will be displayed.
If this is the case, then follow these steps:
- Click on “Game Settings” and then click “Open Game Settings“
- In the “Basic Game Settings” window, find the “Character Animation Patterns” field.
- Change the settings properly according to the material you prepared.
[Side Note 3] Effects of External Functions
Please check the file name of the character chip.
Does it end with “T.png” or “TX.png” (such as RAT.png)?
When the file name ends with “T.png” or “TX.png”, a special function operates to change the number of image divisions. If you tried using a file with the names mentioned above, the image will not be displayed correctly.
In this case, changing the file name should solve the issue. (This problem rarely happens though, but I’ll put it here just in case.)
